LOVES LABOUR lost

Eine Performancesituation, bei der Schallplatten während
des Abspielens mit Farbe versiegelt werden.
Im Nassverfahren werden Tonträger normalerweise
digitalisiert und verschwinden danach im Archiv. Bei
Loves Labour lost wird das Publikum selbst zum Archiv,
zu Zeug:innen einer Geschichte, erzählt in Soundcollagen,
Texten, Songs, Fieldrecordings und psychoakustischen
Kompositionen des Undergrounds.
Während die Musik läuft, versiegelt ein präparierter
Plattenspieler die Rillen mit Kunstharzlack. Die Platten
werden dabei für immer unbrauchbar, aus Tonträgern werden
visuelle Objekte. Was einmal erklingt, ist danach für immer verstummt.
Die eingeladenen Künstler:innen versammeln sich auf
einer Schallplatte und nähern sich dem „Unten" in all
seinen Bedeutungen: dem Untergrund, dem Jenseits,
dem Okkulten, dem Verborgenen und Begrabenen, dem
Hinabsteigen und Untergehen.
15 eigens geschnittene Tracks verteilen sich auf drei
Unikat-Schallplatten, die im Dj-Stil miteinander vermischt
werden und im Dialog zueinander eine Erzählung des
Untergrunds entstehen und zugleich wieder
verschwinden lassen.

Swallowing space and time, this durational performance swings dangerously close to its surround in simultaneously evoking theatrical perception and uneventful meditative drama. In it, object, sound, light and motion churn in and spit out a single performer’s sustained effort to maintain the center of everything all at once at Reaktor’s grand hall. Melanie Maar and Christian Schröder create a field of attention for performer and audience alike, conjuring a continuum between hard-earned individual agency and a pleasurable surrender to collectively being eaten alive.

LINE DEATH DANCE

Line Death Dance is a ceremonial improvisation for change. It has become a long term project in cooperation with organizations in Vienna and New York City since 2018.
Originally a performance residency conceived for ritualizing The Chocolate Factory Theater’s transition from their old building into their new one. Then things changed. A performance series, a book, a newsletter and now a film emerged from it.
'More than ever I look to performance to hold us, to challenge us and to entertain us with the mundane and the magical nowness specific to each context and perceiver. In ourselves and in each other, this togetherness can carry death as the very essence of
the sensual a'live'ness. In many ways performance can serve as a practice of embracing dying in offering it’s unique psycho sensual reality now here then gone.

Exit Skin is a short film about the end of time. Apocalypse or
Utopia set in a raw factory building and the city nature surround.
Matriarchal icons, machinery and sensual texture come into symbiotic collision. Like a collage of abandoned essentials, randomly assembled guiding the eye through an alternate narrative of being.
